We're not talking about people who survived an attempted abortion procedure, but rather that they survived in the era of abortion-on-demand.  Every baby born after January 22, 1973 could have been the victim of abortion.  The only thing that stood between you and death is the decision of your mother.  (www.nrlc.org/news/2002/NRL04/ten.html)

At least 97% of all infant deaths were caused by abortion in 2000.*  Today approximately 1 in every 4 pregnancies end in abortion.

In every other species individuals in that species are defined by their DNA.  The DNA of the human fetus makes it a unique human being.  We believe that humans should benefit from the same scientific standard that applies to all other species.

Viability means in general "capacity for survival" and is more specifically used to mean a capacity for living, developing, or germinating under favorable conditions. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viability

We use the scientific definition of viability to mean that an organism can thrive in the environment that it is adapted to in each stage of its life cycle.  A common definition of viability that has come to be accepted in the age of abortion is that a baby is capable of living outside the mother's womb; before you decide on which definition of viability to use, we hope you will read the following example of a protected toad, Bufo houstonensis.

The protected toad, Bufo houstonensis, is adapted to live on dry land, but if you leave it on dry land during its tadpole stage, (thus committing a federal crime) it will soon die, because that stage of the toad's development is not adapted to live on dry land.  So, one of the land management guidelines written to protect the species includes protecting their pond habitat.

The human fetus is well adapted to survive inside its mother's womb.  To remove the fetus from its mother's womb is to kill that human just the same as taking the tadpole and putting it on dry land kills the Bufo houstonensis.

The fetus is a unique, individual human.  The fetal stage is part of the human life cycle.  A Homo sapiens (a member of the human race) dies in every abortion.

*HOW WE ARRIVED AT 97% OF INFANT DEATHS CAUSED BY ABORTION:

National Center for Health Statistics; Deaths: Leading Causes for 2000; NVSR Vol. 50, No. 16, pg 16.  In the year 2000 all causes of infant death, all races, both sexes were 28,035 from birth to 1 year.

Also in the year 2000 a total of 857,475 legal induced abortions were reported to CDC.  Total death count for 2000 is 885,510, abortion being 97% of that total.

"For 2000, CDC compiled [abortion] data that were voluntarily provided from 49 reporting areas in the United States: 47 states (excluding Alaska, California, and New Hampshire), the District of Columbia, and New York City."  This means the figure of 857,475 does not include abortion statistics from Alaska, California, New Hampshire, the District of Columbia and New York City.
